Cliff Evans: EMPYREAN
October 17 – November 22, 2009
Presented by The Library and Curator’s Office
For his first solo show in Baltimore, Evans will feature his seminal piece, Empyrean, a five-channel HD video projection measuring approximately 10’h x 25’w. In addition, Evans will present a multi-channel video piece on LCD monitors. His video projection, Empyrean is a digital polyptych with photomontage animation that recalls the form of 15th-century Northern European altarpieces merged with contemporary advertising narratives. Scene after scene of Evans’s five-channel projection has deliberate order and disquieting disorder, creating a loose but provocative narrative around the subjects of power and population control, coded with interesting and often humorous subtexts. Empyrean’s themes are developed through an absurd juxtaposition of both benign traditions and disturbing pathologies: wellness tourism, missionary practice, and militaristic domination. Evans’s extensive investigation into his subjects is enhanced by a trained eye and impressive skill using image detail and color.
PASSAGE
June 26 – August 16, 2008
Passage looks towards the transitional state of being neither here nor there when examining one’s sense of self in the world. Through the use of drawing, painting, illustration, sculpture, and video, Passage emphasizes the change of status for the individual, whether genuine or perceived, as a result of conquest, crisis, or ritual and how these historical and social underpinnings are shaping contemporary society.
Featured artists include: Maggie Covert, Phillip Estlund, Eamon Espey, Matthew McConville, Richard Roussell, and Justin Storms.
