THE LIBRARY: ART / VIDEO / YOGA

The Library and Art on Purpose are pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition entitled Kitchen Stories, featuring works by artist Julie Lin as well as art and recipes by immigrants, including refugees and asylum seekers, from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America.  An opening celebration takes place Saturday, June 20, 2009 from 4-7pm at The Library, 1401 Light Street Baltimore, MD 21230. The exhibition runs from June 20 through July 25, 2009 with gallery hours each Saturday 12-4 pm (except July 4th). The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Julie Lin, Art on Purpose's Resident Community Artist, who also conceived the project, implemented a series of workshops at local social service organizations working with adult refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers in the Baltimore community. During each three-hour workshop, clients of Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma (ASTT) and other organizations serving immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, including the International Rescue Committee, Adelante Familia and Baltimore City Community College’s Refugee Assistance Program, engaged in a variety of cooking and collage workshops and events.

During each session, participants discussed cooking, eating and family, exploring issues of identity and assimilation. They traded stories of their lives, shared recipes from their native countries and created art works to illustrate their experiences.

Participants will share their artwork and recipes at the opening reception. A catalogue featuring art by the participants and Julie Lin, recipes, and the immigrant experiences of workshop participants will also be available. The catalogue was written by Susan Sachs Fleishman and designed by Glenn Dellon.

Sponsored by the Suzanne F. Cohen Opportunity Fund, with additional support from the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund.

Art on Purpose is a 501-c3 that is dedicated to the notion that art has an intrinsic value that is best revealed when it connects and engages with real life concerns and is, at the same time, presented professionally. We view artists’ expressions and community interests as equally important, and believe each can enhance the other through innovative and informative art workshops and exhibitions. Art on Purpose provides an educational, guided process, so that individuals and groups whose concerns really need to be seen, and should be heard, will be understood through a high-level of artistic presentation.
